ULEZ Charge London

The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) in London has been running since April 8th 2019.  Initially, it covered the area of Central London, which is the same as the current Congestion Charge Zone.  The plans to extend the zone where already in place and will soon come into action.

The ULEZ charge will extend from the 25th of October 2021.  The larger zone will be all areas within the North and South circular.

The charge for entering the ULEZ area will be £12.50 for cars & motorcycles. This is active 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.  If you live in this area, you may be entitled to some reductions, check out our ULEZ Exemption rules blog. (Note: If you are parked in the zone and don’t drive, you won’t need to pay)

As the ULEZ area will operate 24 hours a day (midnight to midnight), drivers will need to be careful if they are entering the zone just before midnight, they could risk getting charged for 2 days or even worse only thinking they need to pay for one day and getting fined for the second day.

How to avoid the ULEZ Charge

If your vehicle is not ULEZ compliant, then you would need to replace your vehicle.  You can take advantage of the Mayors ULEZ Scrappage Scheme, we’ve written about the whole process as we used it ourselves on this blog.

To be ULEZ compliant, your vehicle must be either Euro 4 standard if you drive a petrol vehicle and Euro 6 standard if you drive a diesel vehicle. Petrol vehicles first registered with DVLA from 2005 are often ULEZ compliant and most diesel cars registered after 2015 are also compliant.  You can use our free ULEZ checker to double-check if your vehicle is compliant.

Will the congestion charge zone expand?

There was some news of this during the last few months, but we’ve heard that this won’t happen.  But the current congestion zone is running 7 days a week and the enforcement time has increased to 7 am to 10 pm daily.  Remember if you enter the Congestion Charge Zone, and your vehicle is not ULEZ compliant, you will need to pay both the Congestion Charge and ULEZ charge.
