Silvertown Tunnel to Undergo 17 Overnight Closures for Maintenance and Snagging Works

The newly opened Silvertown Tunnel, which stretches 1.4km beneath the River Thames connecting Greenwich and Newham, will undergo a series of overnight closures through to 22 June 2025. Transport for London (TfL) has announced that the closures are necessary to carry out general maintenance and snagging works on the £2.2 billion project.

Since its official opening on 7 April, the tunnel has provided a much-needed alternative route across the Thames in east London. However, TfL has confirmed that 17 overnight closures are planned, affecting both southbound and northbound traffic at different times.

Impact on Travel and Bus Services

  • When only the southbound tunnel is closed, bus services will be diverted via the Blackwall Tunnel.
  • When the northbound or both directions are shut, buses will operate a split-service, terminating at Canning Town (north side) and North Greenwich (south side). Passengers are advised to use the Tube or route 108 to complete their journeys across the river.

A TfL spokesperson said:

“TfL will look to ensure bus services can continue to run where possible and has been communicating with drivers about the closures and weekly customer emails.”

Planned Overnight Closure Schedule:

  • Friday 30 May – 22:00–06:00 (Southbound only)

Toll Charges Still Apply

TfL recommends checking travel updates regularly and planning journeys in advance to avoid disruption during the overnight closure periods.
